Extending WinRAR integration in Windows Explorer

A small trick to save time when extracting RAR files in Windows.

The usual way would be to navigate to C:\storage\foorelease-ABC\ , find a RAR file and double-click on it to run WinRAR, choose a directory to extract to and then wait for it to finish.

For me it’s okay to just say that all extracted files are to be put in, for example c:\storage\.

How:

Create a .reg file with your favorite editor. Enter:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\unrar]
@=”Extract RAR to parent directory”

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\unrar\command]
@=”C:\\Program Files\\Winrar\\winrar.exe x %L\\*.rar %L\\..”

save and run it. This will add an extra option on the right-click menu in Windows Explorer.

Now you can mark the release name, right click and have all files in all rar files in this subdirectory get extracted into the directory above.
